"I'm new"

We are glad that you are visiting our website.  We invite you also to visit us in person. Worship is the heartbeat of our community's life. You are invited to join us as we gather together to praise God who meets us in Christ Jesus. We worship together on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m.

On this website, you'll find descriptions of the many ways we live out our faith.  We hope that you will find a place in our midst where you can journey with us in faith and hope.

Central United is a church in the heart of the city with the city at heart.  In many different ways we seek to know God through Christ and to make Christ known to others.

What can you expect:

Attending Sunday services

Location    220 George Street, Sarnia, Ontario

Central is located at the corner of Brock and George Streets in Sarnia, Ontario.  Brock Street is a one-way street, heading north.  The entrance to the parking lot is from George Street.

Service times

Worship begins at 10:30 a.m.  Most people arrive about 10 minutes before the service. Sometimes, our choir director will use this time to teach the congregation new songs that will be used in the worship service.  Then, he will play some quiet music as people prepare for worship. Following some announcements, the service itself begins

Parking lot

There is parking available in a large lot accessible from George Street.  There are several designated handicapped parking spots close to the entrance door covered by the red canopy. There are a few spots designated for families with young children.

Sanctuary  (Worship centre)

You may enter the sanctuary directly through the two outside doors on Brock Street.

Central United was built at a time when people were not conscious of the need for access for people with physical handicaps.  Consequently, there are many stairs all around the building.  If climbing stairs is a problem for you, there is a lift available at the middle entrance on Brock Street.  Please ring the bell and someone will be there to operate the lift for you.

If you enter through the parking lot door (with the red canopy), you get to the sanctuary by going up the short flight of stairs directly ahead of you, straight down the hallway and turn right after you go through the doorway.  There will be someone at the door to greet you and to give you a copy of the order of worship for the day.

The northmost entrance on Brock Street opens into Central’s chapel.  This chapel is used for worship services in the summer. The rest of the year, the door to it is locked.

Worship

The worship service begins following the announcements.  The order of service is projected on the front walls of the sanctuary and is printed in the bulletin that you may choose to receive as you enter the sanctuary. The service includes times of praise, singing, prayer, hearing the good news of God's love and opportunities to respond.  The congregation stands at the times indicated by an * in the bulletin.  There are hearing assists available for those persons who need them.  Ask any of the greeters at the doors to the sanctuary to provide one for you.

Children and infants are welcome in the worship service. There is also a  staffed nursery for infants and toddlers.

Children and youth are invited to participate in Sunday School partway through the worship service.

What should I wear?

Although you are welcome here whatever you are wearing, you will find most men dressed in khakis and polo shirts, to suits and ties. Women generally wear pants, skirts or dresses. What is most important, though, is that we look forward to seeing you, not what you're wearing.

What is there for my children?

Sunday School -- The children begin in the sanctuary with the adults.  Early on in the service, they leave to go to Sunday School.

Nursery -- There is a staffed Nursery every Sunday morning.  It is located to the right at the top of the first flight of stairs at the parking lot entrance (red canopy) .

Communion

We celebrate communion 5 or 6 times a year. Bread and grape juice are used. All who are present in worship are welcome to receive communion.

Other Activities

Other activities happen throughout the week. Check  in the bulletin (posted on the home page each week) for a summary of those events.
